SQA ENGINEER - AUTOMOTIVE

I have worked at McLaren Automotive for the last seven years since completing a Motorsport Engineering HND course.

My career started as a Production Team Member building the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren which led, a year later, to being promoted to Senior Team Member.

After four years working in Production, I moved to the Service and Aftersales Department to take on the role of Service Co-ordinator. My function was to be the main point of contact between Daimler and McLaren for all SLR service-related issues. A typical day involved answering technical requests received from the Daimler SLR Helpdesk, analysing warranty data, writing up service reports to feedback information into the business and also writing workshop documentation.

My job also included some travel, to support Markets, when required, with technical advice and also to document and report issues back into the McLaren Automotive business.

I have recently changed roles and am now working as a Supplier Quality Assurance Engineer for Body Systems on future projects. This role focuses on the process of part maturity from the initial design right through to the production intent part. I work very closely with both McLaren Design Engineers and part manufacturers to ensure that the parts designed are feasible to make and that the produced parts are within design tolerances and satisfy our manufacturing process requirements. Communication with suppliers and design engineers and a good working relationship is key to the SQA role.

I am still relatively new to the role and learning new skills all the time. Each day is different and presents new challenges; I could be in a future model design study one day and flying out to a supplier to fix a problem the next.

I thoroughly enjoy working for McLaren Automotive and to be able to work in such a great environment as the Technology Centre is an added bonus!
