DESIGN ENGINEER - AUTOMOTIVE
As a Design Engineer, my role involves working with a wide variety of components and responsibilities.
As part of the Chassis Systems function group, I work together with other engineers, quality representatives, and members of the purchasing and logistics groups. Teamwork is the key to working at McLaren Automotive and together we are responsible for delivering systems and components from the initial brief through to production and beyond.
My main responsibilities include taking components and assemblies through the complete engineering cycle; from the initial brief through concept design and feasibility, writing specifications, embodiment and detail design, supporting development and testing, system validation, to production line support, and quality issue resolution. Key parts of this role are working to financial and time constraints, team working, building technical working relationships with suppliers and on-going supplier liaison. A key ability is to be able to work across design groups and across disciplines - outside of normally defined roles - in order to successfully resolve issues quickly.
In addition to design work, I also co-ordinate the project tasks required to deliver the parts and systems I am responsible for by leading the members of the function group through the various stages of a project. This project management involves planning, budgetary and commercial overviews, and reporting project status to the executive team. As a design engineer I have significant input to all stages of the design and development process which creates a strong feeling of ownership for a project. The learning curve is often very steep and the job is also very demanding but there is a real sense of satisfaction and achievement in seeing the finished car roll off the production line.
